Two Waterfalls In Petit Jean State Park - Central Arkansas

Both waterfalls shown are located in Petit Jean State Park in central Arkansas.  It’s a great park with many trails, beautiful scenery, and cabins built by CCC workers in the 1930s.

Petit Jean Mountain juts up abruptly from the Arkansas River Valley.   Cedar Creek has carved a steep canyon through the mountain. These waterfalls are along Cedar Creek. The one in the first photo  is aptly named Cedar Creek Falls. The one in the second shot is more appropriately called a cascade and appears to be unnamed.

Table Rock Lake Flooded

Flood

During this stay at my mother's home, it has been impossible to avoid evidence of the flooding that has plagued the area. The sign in the phot, which announces the boat ramp on Table Rock Lake near my mother's cabin, reads:

CAUTION
LAKE AHEAD

SLOW TO 10 MPH

The storms which led to this flood in southwestern Missouri occurred 11 days before this photo was taken.

Folks around here, however, are of hardy stock and are adapting. The "Tim's Trout Tips" column in the May 4, 2011 Barry County Advertiser reports local fishermen have had successful outings lately despite the lake being at record high levels and advises "If you want to use your fly rod, look at the heavier glo balls, san juan worms, and bigger bright woolybuggers,"

Words to live by.

Mother's Day Hiatus In The Ozarks

Photos: The first and third photos of Table Rock Lake were taken during the day from Mom's deck. The fourth photo was taken from the same location at dusk. The second shot was taken near Shell Knob, Missouri. All photos were shot during a July 2010 trip.

DrHGuy is spending a few days with his Mom at her cabin on Table Rock Lake in the Ozarks. The DrHGuy and Heck Of A Guy sites will be dormant until his return Wednesday, May 11, 2011.

Just In Time For Halloween - The Ozarks Spook Light

The Ozarks Spook Light (also, Spooklight).  The saga of my up close and personal encounter with the Ozarks Spooklight (also spelled “Spook Light”) is not technically linked to Halloween, but it is - well, spooky, and that seems close enough.

The following excerpt provides a sense of the (absolutely true) story:

It was at this time that our conviction that we understood how the world operated in general, along with our beliefs in specific scientific principles, dissolved in the acute, undiluted fear of impending doom.

This genuinely scary story can be found at Spooklight Story. General information about the Spooklight is located at The Spooklight Background.
