Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.
One cannot help but note that Leonard Cohen is pictured here with a impressive amount of poetry.
Leslie PY Wener forwards the above photo and this description:
This photo of Leonard and Deuter was taken in Munich in the early 70’s. It is backstage at one of Leonard’s concerts.
I love the photo of both of them. I spoke to Deuter (also known as Chaitanya) on the telephone before Christmas and he gave me permission to post this photo. He says he thinks it was 1970 or a couple years later. I thought everyone would love to see this one.
I know Deuter (Chaitanya) from a spiritual community in India we used to live in during the late 70’s and early 80’s. He said he had more photos but has lost them over the years and this is the only one remaining. Deuter (Chaitanya) told me at the time he was working for a newspaper in Munich and he interviewed Leonard. He told him he was also a musician. After the interview they played together backstage in a playful way. He told me he remembers a lot of laughing. He said how kind Leonard was. Deuter (Chaitanya), who has been acclaimed as the founder of New Age music, has put out over 70 albums in his genre and still loves Leonard’s music.

While Chris Grosz's caricature of George Johnston & Leonard Cohen has been frequently posted on various sites since it was published in the November 2005 issue of The Monthly as an illustration for George Johnston & Leonard Cohen by Shane Maloney, the serendipity of discovering its most recent appearance in today's OzTypewriter entry, Typewriting Couples by Robert Messenger, one day after posting the Leonard Cohen cartoon at The Many Drawers Of Leonard Cohen, putting it once again on display irresistible.
The text of Typewriting Couples explains that the image "shows Leonard Cohen and George Johnston at their typewriters outside the Katsikas Brothers grocery store ... on Hydra in 1960. Presumably that's Marianne Jensen, not Charmian Clift, naked in the window with the glass of red wine." The article also offers a biographical sketch of George Johnston and his wife, Charmian Clift, as well as a description of their connection with Leonard Cohen and Marianne Jensen on Hydra. Several photos, many featuring typewriters, of these folks and their families are included.
