Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" As Stripper Music In Exotica

After posting about Locations used in filming Exotica (see also Women Disrobe While Leonard Cohen Music Plays - Yet, Something Feels Wrong), it seemed the right time to see the action itself. Consequently, in the above video we have Leonard Cohen performing “Everybody Knows,” part of the Exotica soundtrack.

As a bonus, the video below displays Mia Kirshner performing at the Exotica.

Leonard Cohen Songs In Soundtrack High Point For Natural Born Killers

Framing the film with a pair of brilliant Cohen songs almost renders the remainder of Natural Born Killers irrelevant. In about ten minutes’ worth of music, Cohen has already said everything that the film intends to say, and manages to do so with an eloquence that really can’t be matched by all the fancy editing and film tricks in the world.

McCabe and Mrs.Miller is an intelligent, insightful post by Kate on the Robert Altman anti-western movie of that name, starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie and featuring songs by Leonard Cohen, as an exemplar of “Movies like ‘The Parallax View’ and ‘Harold and Maude,’ that paired social commentary with unusual soundtrack choices.” Consider this nicely phrased note,

The film is bathed in a kind of daguerreotype haze, which works in concert with the three Leonard Cohen songs featured.

Altman obtained the rights to the entire record “The Songs of Leonard Cohen” and ended up using the songs “Sisters of Mercy,” “The Stranger Song,” and “Winter Lady.”

Torontoist: Reel Toronto: An Exotic Slice of Egoyan: Torontoist checks out the local scenes from Atom Egoyan’s flicks, including Exotica, one of two films featuring a strip joint where exotic dancers shed their costumes and perfromed gymnastic feats to a Leonard Cohen-enhanced sound track. It’s your lucky day; The Heck of a Guy post, Women Disrobe While Leonard Cohen Music Plays - Yet, Something Feels Wrong, ponders Cohen’s music in both movies, Exotica and Dancing At The Blue Iguana.

Excerpt from Torontoist:

You’re looking for a classy peeler, right? The kind of place that has both full frontal and Leonard Cohen on the soundtrack? You don’t mind if the MC is a bit of a creepy guy who delivers lengthy, quasi-esoteric monologues? Well, then Exotica is the place for you. Sadly, Exotica does not actually exist. Reel Toronto’s team of detectives determined that the club exterior is merely the back of a store on Mutual Street, located between Queen and Shuter. As you can see above, the spires of Metropolitan United Church provide a fine contrast to the towers of commerce lingering behind in the financial district.
